CHOOSING A MENTOR/COACH! PART ONE!

A lot of people find it very difficult to choose a mentor and a lot more don't even have one. For you to be successful, you must be accountable to someone. Someone you can report all your excesses to, someone who can call you to order. But you must also understand you can't just choose anyone to mentor you because I asked you to get one. So let's look at the steps on how to choose the right mentor.

What is Mentoring/Coaching?
Mentoring/Coaching and are learning relationships which help people to take charge of their own development, to release their potential and to achieve results which they value"

“Mentors are people who, through their action and work, help others to achieve their potential.” “Mentor helps the Mentee to achieve the aimed results by encouragement, guidance, role modelling, feedback and support”

As stated above, mentoring is a process in which an experienced individual helps another person to develop his or her goals and skills through a series of time-limited, confidential, one-on-one conversations and other learning activities. Mentor also benefits from the mentoring relationship. Mentor, will also have the opportunity to share their wisdom and experiences, evolve their own thinking, develop a new relationship, learn mutually, and deepen their skills as a mentor.

A mentoring relationship can be:
Informal where mentoring occurs in a spontaneous format OR
Formal where mentoring relationship is characterized by its intentionality – the partners in the relationship ask for or offer the mentoring, establish goals for the relationship and make agreements about its nature.

Mentoring relationships can take place at all professional levels. The key feature of a mentoring relationship is that a more experienced individual helps another achieve his or her goals and develop as a person.

What makes mentoring work?
·      The success of coaching and mentoring is in the establishment of an effective relationship, based upon mutual respect, honesty and understanding.

·      A mentor doesn’t necessarily have to be someone senior to you, but rather needs to have the motivation and training to support you (the mentee) in your development.

·      It goes without saying that other qualities such as a varied career and life experience, a wide professional network and commitment to their own development will enrich the mentoring relationship.

·      The mentor would need to have “something” (quality / skill / experience) that you see as being helpful to you in your personal or professional life.

A mentor does not give advice, rather helps the mentee to weigh up situations, through a process of reflection, questions, challenge and feedback allowing the mentee to come to a decision themselves. It is crucial to remember that in any mentoring relationship it is the mentee who drives the agenda, not the mentor.
