FEEDING YOURSELF
Text: “As new born babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that
ye may grow thereby.”1 Peter 2:2
One of the signs that a child is growing is when the child begin to
feed himself or herself. It’s good to be fed by the mother but this cannot
continue forever. A time will come that the mother’s feeding will no longer be
enough. If a child at ten years old still depends on the mother to put food in
his mouth then there is something seriously wrong.
This analogy is applicable to our Christian life. Each one of us
will have to learn how to feed for ourselves. Thank God for what we hear in
Church but it will be grossly inadequate for our growth into maturity. A time
comes that the mother will no longer be available as much as when the child was
very small. Each one of us must carry our Bibles personally and begin to read.
If you leave the job of your Christian growth to your Pastor alone you may
never grow up spiritually. The pastor is supposed to build a foundation for you
that you then begin to build on it by yourself.
If a child will depend on the mother for feeding forever then the
child will have to wait for the mother to come back from work every day. Obviously
that child will starve. If you have to wait to see your pastor or get to church
then you will have to starve most of the time. Reach out to God’s word
yourself. Reach out to good Christian materials by yourself. Look for every
means to enrich yourself of the knowledge of God. With that you can grow faster
and at the rate that God wants you to grow. When we grow up spiritually God can
commit greater responsibilities to us and we can also handle the issues of life
by ourselves without having to depend on someone else all the time. If you
depend on someone to do all your feeding for you then you may have to remain a
baby Christian all your life.
PRAYER:
Lord I receive grace to take full responsibility for my spiritual
growth. I will no longer remain a spiritual babe.
